A long time ago when in school, I had a two week temp job as the Easter Bunny in the mall.

Totally in character, I hopped out to my throne. Kids were placed on my lap for photos. When the parents backed away, the kids would start asking for presents. "I want a Barbie." "I want a GI Joe." And on and on.

I replied, "Listen, kid. I'm the Easter Bunny. I do painted eggs. I do candy. I will gladly convey your request to my colleague, Santa Clause, but I'm the Easter Bunny. I do painted eggs. I do candy. Is dat all right wit youse?"

The wide eyed kids would nod, and slowly back away from the bunny.

I have a picture I will post when I have a moment.

The six food groups of Valentine's Day

These are what I refer to as the six food groups of Valentine's Day.
A gift from each category is best for balance, not merely one gift from one category.

Not included on this list, but always an excellent idea, is a romantic dinner. This is not a substitute for these food groups, but should instead be thought of as a presentation venue, in the same way that the gift wrapping on a present adds to the present but is not a substitute for the gift itself.

Two to Smell:
1. Perfume
This must match the style and preference of the recipient, whether floral, citrus, spicy, earthy, or some mix. Find what her favorite is, and get more of same, or get accessory fragrance items, such as powder, bath oils, etc. A knowledgeable fragrance expert at a quality store is useful. ("I'm looking for a citrus fragrance with hints of spice. Can you recommend something?")
2. Flowers
These are best delivered the day before Valentine's Day, to her place of work. Flowers on ValDay may not arrive on time. The day before improves likelihood of successful delivery, and gives her coworkers more time to admire the flowers. You do not need to default to red roses. Pick something unique for her in her colors.

Two to Eat:
3. Champagne
This should be of good quality, of course.
4. Chocolate
These should be according to the taste of the recipient, but always of good quality, not a vending machine candy bar.

Two to Wear:
5. Jewelry
Again, what are her colors and what will go with her style.
6. Lingerie
This is where you get to give her what you would like to see her in, rather than what she might choose for herself. Everything else is about her preferences and style. Again, pick something of good quality, and know her sizes for everything. Write this info down where you can find it and refer to it.

Bonus #7
In the right circumstances, and with the right person, an additional bonus group includes toys. Use your imagination.

...MacBook Pro laptop. Ready for class to start tomorrow.
They published my entire application essay in the first issue of the program newletter. Mine was the only essay they published.

A Parable of Integrated Marketing

Once upon a time a group of apprentice woodworkers was assigned by their Master to build a throne for the king.

Harold Hammerer was the apprentice who was most skilled with the hammer. Sammy Sawyer was the best with the saw. Likewise, Patrick Planer, Darryl Driller, and Vincent Varnisher each had their own specialty.

After a week, the Master called the apprentices together and asked to see the throne. “See the wood I have sawn,” said Sammy. “Here is the wood that I hammered,” held Harold. “These are the boards I planed,” proclaimed Patrick. “See the many holes I drilled,” declared Darryl. “Look how beautifully the wood gleams,” voiced Vincent.

“Yet, despite all your excellent work, there is no throne,” remarked the Master woodworker. “There is only a pile of sawn, hammered, planed, drilled and varnished wood. Each of you practiced your own specialty very well, but there is still no throne.

This parable reflects my experience with non-integrated marketing.

I was hired as an Associate Creative Director to fill a newly created position at McCann Worldgroup. The position was created in response to client complaints about programs that were supposed to be fully integrated and carry a coherent and consistent message across all media but instead seemed to have been created by five entirely different companies who weren’t communicating with each other. The client was correct: the business model of the agency located each discipline in a separate company.

As of my hiring, methods for coordinating the disciplines of an integrated campaign were informal and relied heavily on the personal relationships of individuals at each company, many of whom had vested interests in maintaining individual control over their perceived territories.
I was able to develop and implement limited process improvements during my time at the agency, but my accomplishments were limited by two factors: a lack of honest commitment from management, and the tunnel vision of the individual companies.
The latter difficulty takes me back to the parable of the apprentice woodworkers. The saying that “if the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail,” was never more applicable than at the agency. The advertising company saw the answer to every problem as a
30 second television spot. The public relations company saw the answer to every problem as a series of well-written press releases, and so on.

As in most complex situations, the answer could have included some or all of the possible methods of marketing communication. Occasionally the answer was inclusive of the various disciplines, and was highly effective, resulting in significant measurable results for the client. More often, only part of the possible solution was effectively implemented, and the results were therefore limited.

Over the course of my career, I have sought additional education and training of relevance. Earlier this year, prompted by my experiences with non-integrated marketing, I attended an open house at Eastern Michigan University. I inquired about the possibility of an interdisciplinary program that could combine elements of management, communications, and design. I was surprised and pleased to hear that the MS, IMC program was under development. I see this program as a logical next step in my career.

I have been recently engaged by a small marketing and design firm to help them grow into a full-service integrated marketing agency. The Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications will have daily applicable relevance to my professional work as I guide the agency, design process improvements, and mentor the staff. I expect that the knowledge gained in the MS, IMC program will facilitate my ability to develop comprehensive and viable IMC plans, fully and effectively utilize each IMC discipline, and measure the results of IMC campaigns.

Eventually, we will do more than produce a pile of sawn, hammered, planed, drilled and varnished wood. We will do more than build a throne. We will furnish castles.

The software looks like I will be able to use it for work planning as well.
However, the University hasn't yet sent me an official acceptance (I was notified by the program exec, and I have written to him about this) so I don't have the student ID and log in that I need to actually register for the class that begins on January 8.

It's good to be home. The shoot went very well. I will have lots of work to do on the images. For dinner last night we went to a place that seemed to be a cross between a sushi bar and a Hooter's. The sushi was some of the best I've had, and I understand that they are working on opening a similar restaurant in Royal Oak in the spring.

The flight back was easier that the flight out, as the seat next to me was unoccupied. I think it was the only unoccupied seat on the plane. The movie was "The Illusionist." I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it.

It's good to be home.

The photo shoot is going well. There has been more improvisation necessary than I prefer, due to budget constraints, but we have gotten some terrific results. If the last major setup with the dump truck goes well tomorrow then I will see if I can get an earlier flight out on Friday.

I went to the local fighting practice tonight, even though I wasn't able to bring my armor. I met some very nice people, gained some insights, and gave some pointers to a few people. Most of the practice was melee as they are starting to preare for Estrella.

The more I watched the more I really wished I had been able to bring not only my armor, but also the rest of Cynnabar.
